What a Family Maternity Session Looks Like with Your Partner and Children

One of my favorite things about photographing a family maternity session is that they’re about so much more than the baby bump. Yes, this is an exciting time to celebrate your pregnancy, but it’s also a chance to document your family exactly as it is before everything changes. This season is just as meaningful for your partner and children as it is for you, and I love creating galleries that reflect all of those relationships.

Your Maternity Session Isn’t Just One Type of Photo

One of the biggest misconceptions about family maternity sessions is that they’ll feel like either a maternity session or a family session. They’re both! As we move through the session, we naturally photograph a little bit of everything. We start with the whole family together, spend some time focusing on just mom and her growing bump, capture a few portraits of mom and dad together, and there’s still plenty of room for your little one to steal the show, too. By the end of the evening, you’ll have a gallery that tells the full story of this season instead of focusing on just one part of it.

You’ll Still Have Beautiful Photos of Just You

One thing I always want expecting moms to know is that even when your partner and children join the session, you’ll still have plenty of time for individual portraits. You deserve photographs that celebrate everything your body is doing during this season. During this session, we’ll move back and forth between different combinations. While dad spends a few minutes playing with your little one, I photograph mom on her own. That balance is one of my favorite parts of photographing growing families because it allows everyone to be included while still making space to celebrate mom.

The Sweetest Moments Usually Aren’t Planned

One of the reasons I love photographing families outdoors is that there’s room for everyone to relax. Instead of asking children to stand still and smile at the camera for an hour, I gently guide families through the session and encourage them to interact with each other naturally. A lot of times the best photos happen in between the “official” photos. With your little one wrapped around your belly, giving the baby kisses without anyone asking, and proudly holding hands walking together.

Keeping Little Ones Happy

Parents sometimes worry that young children won’t make it through an entire maternity session, but I never expect them to. Kids do best when they have space to explore, play, and simply be themselves. That means we keep things moving, take breaks when we need to, and let little moments unfold naturally instead of trying to force perfect smiles.

Coordinating Outfits Without Matching

Before every maternity session, I also help families think through what everyone will wear. I usually recommend choosing colors that work well together rather than having everyone wear the exact same outfit. Soft neutrals and simple textures photograph beautifully outdoors and help keep the focus on your family instead of your clothing.

One of the Last Chapters Before Everything Changes

One of the things I love most about maternity sessions like this is that they preserve a season that’s gone so quickly. Right now, your oldest child is still the baby of the family. Your partner is waiting alongside you, imagining what life will look like in just a few short weeks. Your family feels complete in one way, even though you know it’s about to grow. If you’re looking for an Austin maternity photographer, Texas Hill Country maternity photographer, or maternity photographer in Wimberley, I’d love to help you create a session that celebrates your whole family. I typically recommend scheduling maternity photos between 31 and 36 weeks. Reach out today and together we’ll create a session that is true to this exciting season of life.
