Summer in Austin is no joke—but that doesn’t mean you have to skip out on family photos! In fact, some of the best family photo sessions in Austin happen near the water, where the scenery is beautiful, the kids can play, and everyone stays a little cooler. Whether you’re looking for a full-on splash session or just want the calm vibes of a creek or river in the background, here are my top 5 family photo spots in Austin with water access for a fun, refreshing, and visually unique experience.
This North Austin favorite is a go-to for a reason. With shallow creek beds, limestone ledges, and lots of shade, it’s perfect for little ones who want to splash and explore. The mix of water, greenery, and golden light makes every photo look magical.
Pro tip: Go early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid crowds!

Tucked away off Bee Cave Road, Commons Ford is a hidden gem with lake access and tall golden grasses. It’s great for families who want both natural water scenes and open fields in one spot. You can bring a blanket, wade near the shoreline, or just soak in the peaceful vibe.

Looking for something dramatic and outdoorsy? McKinney Falls has waterfalls, big rock formations, and calm water areas perfect for a mix of posed and candid shots. Plus, it’s an adventure your kids will actually enjoy—and that makes for more relaxed, joyful images.
Tip: There’s a small entrance fee, but it’s well worth it.
The Greenbelt has several access points, but Gus Fruh and Twin Falls are especially great for family photo sessions. There are shady trails, big boulders, and swimming holes that feel like you’ve escaped the city completely. It’s perfect for active families and older kids who love to explore.

If you’re in North Austin or the suburbs, Brushy Creek Lake Park offers a great mix of walkable trails, a calm creek, and water access with fewer crowds. The scenery is green and clean, and it’s stroller-friendly too!
