The Best Parks in Austin for Outdoor Family Photos

Family Photographer in Austin | Best Outdoor Parks

As a family photographer in Austin, I’ve come to love how this city combines nature and charm in a way that makes photo sessions feel relaxed, joyful, and truly “you.” Whether you’re planning your annual family portraits or just want to capture your kids in this stage of life, Austin’s parks offer beautiful backdrops all year round. Here are some of my absolute favorite spots for outdoor family photos in and around Austin!

1. Zilker Park

Best for: Iconic Austin views, open skies, city skyline

Zilker is a classic for a reason. With its wide open green space and beautiful views of downtown Austin in the distance, it’s perfect for sunset sessions. Kids can run, parents can play—it’s an easy, stress-free spot with tons of variety. We can even sneak in some shots near Barton Springs or the Zilker Botanical Garden.

2. Mueller Lake Park

Best for: Urban vibes with nature touches

Mueller Lake Park offers a modern, walkable location that still feels like a nature escape. You’ll find wide paths, a beautiful lake, colorful wildflowers in the spring, and even that cool metal-frame pavilion that makes for some architectural shots with personality. It’s a favorite for young families and fur babies!

3. Mayfield Park

Best for: Peaceful, nature-filled sessions

Peacocks. Stone paths. Lush greenery. Need I say more? Mayfield Park is a hidden gem tucked just west of downtown. The stone cottages and garden areas give it a whimsical feel that’s perfect for family portraits with a touch of magic. It’s usually quieter too—great if your kids are a little shy around crowds.

4. Bull Creek District Park

Best for: Water play and nature lovers

If your family loves adventure, Bull Creek is a dream. With its shallow creeks, limestone ledges, and wooded trails, it gives your session a more natural, candid feel. It’s especially stunning in the fall when the leaves turn golden and the creek levels are low enough for safe splashing.

5. Brushy Creek Lake Park

Best for: North Austin families looking for variety

This Cedar Park favorite is super family-friendly and offers everything from tall grasses and trails to a small lake and playful splash pad. It’s great for sessions where you want to include bikes, wagons, or pets. The sunsets here? Always dreamy.

Tips for Your Outdoor Photo Session

  • Golden hour is magic – I always recommend scheduling your session just after sunrise or about 1–2 hours before sunset for the most flattering light.
  • Dress for comfort and movement – I’ll help guide outfit choices, but soft textures and earth tones work beautifully with Austin’s natural backdrops.
  • Let the kids play! – Some of the best photos happen when your family is just being—hugging, laughing, running around. The park setting makes that super easy.
