How to Prepare for Your Central Texas Newborn Photography Session

Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most meaningful milestones. Those early days are filled with tiny yawns, sleepy snuggles, and moments you wish you could freeze forever. That’s exactly why a Central Texas newborn photography session is so special. It captures the beauty of those first days before they pass by in a blur of late-night feedings and baby cuddles.

As a Central Texas newborn photographer, I often hear from parents who feel a little nervous about their session. What should we bring? What should the baby wear? How long will it take? The good news is that newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed and comfortable for both baby and parents. With a little preparation, your session can feel easy, enjoyable, and even a bit magical. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your newborn photography session.

When to Schedule Your Central Texas Newborn Photography Session

The best time to photograph newborns is typically within the first 7–14 days after birth. During this stage, babies tend to be sleepier and more naturally curled up, which helps create those soft, cozy poses many parents love.

Because babies don’t always arrive exactly on their due date, most families schedule their newborn session while still pregnant, usually during the second or third trimester. Once baby arrives, we simply adjust the exact session date based on your little one’s birthday. Planning ahead ensures we can reserve a spot during that ideal window while keeping the schedule flexible for your growing family.

What Should Your Baby Wear?

When it comes to newborn photography, simple is always best. Soft neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby’s tiny features and expressions. Avoid clothing with busy patterns, logos, or bright neon colors, as they can distract from the natural beauty of your baby. Many parents choose outfits like:

  • Soft swaddles or wraps
  • Simple onesies
  • Knit outfits or rompers
  • Neutral blankets

Many newborn sessions also include swaddled poses, which help babies feel secure while creating those peaceful images. If your session is taking place in my studio, I also have a selection of wraps, blankets, and simple accessories available to help create a beautiful look.

What Parents Should Wear

Parents often appear in a few images as well, and those photos tend to become some of the most meaningful ones. For family photos during your newborn session, soft, neutral tones work beautifully. Comfortable, simple clothing tends to photograph best and keeps the focus on your connection with your baby.

What to Bring to Your Central Texas Newborn Photography Session

Newborn sessions are designed to move at baby’s pace, so it’s helpful to bring a few essentials to keep everyone comfortable. Here are a few things parents may want to have on hand:

  • Extra diapers and wipes
  • A pacifier (even if baby doesn’t usually use one)
  • Bottles or feeding supplies if needed
  • A favorite blanket
  • A change of clothes for baby

If the session takes place in your home, we’ll typically use areas like the nursery, bedroom, or living room to create natural images that feel personal to your family.

How Long Do Newborn Sessions Last?

Unlike other portrait sessions, newborn photography is intentionally slow and relaxed. Sessions typically last two to three hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing baby back to sleep if needed. This slower pace helps create a calm environment where baby can remain comfortable, and it allows us to capture a variety of sweet moments along the way.

Relax and Enjoy the Moment

One of the biggest concerns new parents have is whether their baby will “cooperate” during the session. The truth is, newborn sessions are designed with flexibility in mind. Babies set the pace, and there is absolutely no rush.

Some of the most beautiful images often come from those quiet, in-between moments—the way your baby curls up against you, the tiny fingers wrapped around yours, or the peaceful way they sleep in your arms. Those are the memories we’re really capturing!

Capturing These First Precious Days

Those first weeks with your newborn pass faster than anyone expects. Before long, the tiny fingers and sleepy cuddles begin to change as your baby grows. Working with a Central Texas newborn photographer allows you to preserve this fleeting stage in a way that feels natural and timeless. If you’re expecting and would like to schedule your Central Texas newborn photography session, I would love to help you document this beautiful new chapter in your family’s story!
