Spring is one of the most popular times of year for family photos in Texas…and for good reason! The weather is finally warming up, everything starts turning green again, and the light this time of year is just beautiful. One of the most common questions families ask before their session is: “What should we wear?” As a Central Texas family photographer, I can tell you that you don’t need perfectly matched outfits or anything overly complicated. The goal is simply to choose clothing that photographs well together and helps your family feel comfortable and confident. So, if you’re planning spring family photos in Texas, here are a few simple tips that will help you pull outfits together easily.

Spring sessions photograph beautifully with lighter, softer color palettes. Consider colors that feel natural and fresh rather than overly bold. These colors tend to complement the natural scenery we see during spring photos sessions in Central Texas, especially when trees and grass are starting to come back to life. A helpful tip is to pick two or three main colors and then build everyone’s outfits around that palette rather than trying to match exactly.

While bright colors can be fun in everyday life, they don’t always photograph well. Neon shades and loud patterns can pull attention away from faces, which is really the focus of family portraits. Instead, choosing softer tones and simple patterns keeps the images looking timeless. Subtle prints like small florals, light stripes, or textured fabrics can work nicely as long as they aren’t too bold.

Texture is something that makes a huge difference in photos but is often overlooked when choosing outfits. Lightweight fabrics and layers photograph beautifully, especially during spring sessions. Some examples that work really well include:
These fabrics move naturally and add a little visual interest without being distracting.

One trick I often recommend is choosing mom’s outfit first and then building everyone else’s outfits around it. Once you find something you feel great wearing, it becomes much easier to coordinate the rest of the family’s colors and styles. For spring sessions, dresses are always a great option because they photograph beautifully and add movement to the photos.

When kids feel comfortable, it makes the entire session easier. Choose clothing they can move around in easily and avoid anything overly stiff or itchy. Comfortable kids tend to relax faster, which leads to more natural smiles and interactions in photos. Simple outfits like soft dresses, neutral overalls, or lightweight button-down shirts work really well for children.

One of the biggest misconceptions about family photos is that everyone needs to match exactly. Instead, aim for outfits that coordinate without being identical. When colors and styles complement each other without being too similar, the final images tend to feel more natural and visually interesting. Think of it as building a color palette rather than creating identical outfits.
