As a photographer, one of the most rewarding aspects of my work is capturing meaningful moments for my clients, and senior sessions are especially close to my heart. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a talented senior, Rylee at Le San Michele in Buda, Texas—a location that provided the perfect setting for this memorable shoot. Surrounded by spring flowers in full bloom, we were able to create a series of portraits that beautifully reflected the excitement and new beginnings that come with the senior year.
Senior photography sessions are all about telling a story—one that’s unique to each individual. I love taking seniors out of the typical studio setting and immersing them in natural environments that allow their personalities to truly shine. For this shoot, Le San Michele’s gorgeous grounds provided just the right combination of tranquility and beauty. The lush greenery and vibrant spring flowers were not only a stunning backdrop but also added a natural element that enhanced the authenticity of the photos.
Spring, in particular, offers such a dynamic atmosphere for senior sessions. The soft, pastel colors and the vibrancy of blooming flowers create a sense of new beginnings, which is exactly what a senior year represents. The flowers at Le San Michele—with their bright and soft colors—helped evoke a joyful, celebratory feeling in each shot, and I was able to match that energy with natural, relaxed poses.
One of the highlights of this session was definitely the spring flowers in bloom. As a photographer, I always enjoy playing with how nature can enhance a portrait. The vibrant colors of the flowers served as a perfect complement to Rylee’s beautiful maxi dress and natural beauty. From wide shots where the flowers framed the entire scene to close-ups with the flowers blurred softly in the background, the blooms added depth and warmth to every image.
As a photographer, I love using nature’s beauty to enhance the story of the subject. For this session, we chose specific areas of Le San Michele’s garden where the flowers were at their peak. By carefully selecting angles and playing with depth of field, I was able to use the flowers in a way that didn’t overwhelm the subject but instead highlighted the senior in a natural, yet artistic way.
When it comes to senior portraits, lighting is everything. One of my favorite parts of outdoor shoots is being able to work with natural light, especially during golden hour, which occurs just before sunset. For this session at Le San Michele, the timing was perfect. The golden hour light gave the photos a soft, warm glow that added an ethereal quality to the portraits. The sunlight filtered through the trees, casting a dreamy light over the senior and the garden, creating a timeless effect.
As a photographer, knowing how to work with natural light—especially during those fleeting moments at golden hour—can truly make a session magical. The light highlighted Rylee’s features in a way that felt both flattering and organic, blending seamlessly with the surrounding garden.
While posed shots are essential, I always aim to capture authentic, candid moments during a senior session. The beauty of shooting in a setting like Le San Michele is that it allows seniors to feel relaxed and at ease, making it easier to get those genuine expressions. I encourage my clients to engage with the environment, whether they’re walking along the garden path or simply enjoying a moment in the flowers. These candid shots often end up being some of the most beautiful and heartfelt images of the session.
One of my goals as a photographer is to capture my subjects in their most natural state. For this session, I wanted to highlight Rylee’s personality and the excitement of this important time in her life. By guiding them through the process with a mix of poses and natural interactions, I was able to create portraits that truly captured her spirit.
As a photographer, I’ve learned that there are a few key factors to keep in mind when planning an outdoor senior session, especially in a garden setting like Le San Michele:
