From Maternity to Newborn: Two Completely Different Chapters of One Story

One of my favorite things about being an Austin maternity photographer is getting to see just how much changes in such a short amount of time. I had the opportunity to photograph this family for both their maternity and newborn sessions, and I’ve always loved looking at the two galleries side by side because they couldn’t be more different. For the maternity session, we went in a bold, dramatic direction with artistic portraits that really celebrated her pregnancy. Then, once their baby arrived, everything shifted. The newborn session was quieter, softer, and focused on those first few weeks of getting to know their newest family member. I love both galleries for completely different reasons, and together, they tell such a wonderful story of this family’s transition into a new chapter.

An Austin Maternity Photographer’s Take on Dramatic Pregnancy Portraits

When we were planning this family’s maternity session, we intentionally decided to do something a little more dramatic. I love a beautiful, soft maternity session as much as anyone, but there’s also something really fun about creating portraits that feel more artistic and a little outside the box.

For this session, we leaned into that idea with striking images that put the focus on her and her pregnancy. Rather than sticking to the light, airy look that people often associate with maternity photography, we wanted portraits that felt bold and celebrated this season of her life in a different way.

That’s something I always encourage my maternity clients to think about when we’re planning their sessions. You don’t have to choose a particular style just because it’s what you’ve seen other people do. If you love dramatic lighting, beautiful wardrobe pieces, or portraits with a more editorial feel, we can absolutely create something along those lines. And if you prefer a softer, more natural look, that’s wonderful too! There’s plenty of room to make your maternity session feel like you.

Maternity Photography Is a Chance to Celebrate Yourself, Too

I think it’s easy for maternity photos to become entirely focused on the baby, which makes sense because there’s so much excitement about finally meeting them. But I also love reminding expecting moms that this session is about them, too.

Pregnancy asks a lot of your body, and it can be a pretty emotional experience watching yourself change over those nine months. I love giving women the opportunity to step in front of the camera and feel beautiful, confident, and celebrated during that time. Whether that means wearing a dress you wouldn’t normally choose, trying something more dramatic with the lighting, or simply taking an afternoon to focus on yourself, I want the experience to feel special.

As an Austin maternity photographer, I love helping women explore different styles for their sessions, whether that means something bold and artistic or soft and understated. For this particular session, I loved that we embraced a more artistic direction. The images feel strong and striking, and I think they show just how much variety there can be in maternity photography when we’re willing to try something a little different.

And Then Everything Changes When Baby Arrives

Fast forward a few weeks, and I had the opportunity to photograph this family again, only this time their baby was finally here!

One of the things I find so special about photographing both maternity and newborn sessions is seeing that change firsthand. During maternity photos, there’s so much anticipation about who this little person will be and what life is going to look like once they arrive. Then suddenly, I’m photographing the same parents with their baby in their arms, and all of those things they were imagining have become real.

For this family’s newborn session, we went in a completely different direction from their maternity portraits. The mood was much softer and more intimate, with the focus on their new baby and the connection between everyone. And I love that we didn’t try to make the two sessions look alike because they were documenting two completely different experiences.

The Little Moments That Make Newborn Photography So Meaningful

My approach to newborn photography is pretty relaxed because I know those first few weeks with a baby can be a lot. You’re adjusting to a completely new routine, probably not getting quite as much sleep as you’d like, and figuring things out as you go. The last thing I want is for your photo session to feel like one more thing you have to get perfectly right.

With my lifestyle newborn sessions, I focus on photographing your family together and all of those little details that change so quickly. The way your baby fits in your arms, their tiny hands and feet, the snuggles, and the moments when you’re simply enjoying being together. Of course, I’ll help guide you throughout the session, but I also want to leave room for those natural interactions that make the photos feel personal.

I think that’s what makes newborn galleries so special to look back on. You’re not just seeing what your baby looked like when they were a few weeks old. You’re getting a glimpse of what life felt like during those early days, and those are the memories that can become harder to remember as the years go by.

Why I Love That These Two Galleries Look So Different

When I look at these maternity and newborn galleries together, one of my favorite things is that they don’t look like they were created to match. The maternity portraits are bold and artistic, while the newborn photos are soft and intimate. And that’s exactly how I think it should be!

There’s no reason your maternity session and newborn session have to share the same color palette, location, or overall style. You’re experiencing two very different chapters of life, so it makes sense that your photos might reflect that.

That’s one of the reasons I love offering maternity and newborn photography together. As an Austin maternity photographer, I get to create two galleries that feel completely different while still being connected by the same family. Years from now, I think it’ll be so special for this baby to look back at those maternity portraits and then see the photos of their first few weeks at home. It’s such a wonderful way to see how much changed in such a short amount of time.

Planning Your Maternity and Newborn Sessions in Austin

If you’re expecting and thinking about booking both sessions, I always recommend reaching out while you’re still pregnant so we have plenty of time to plan everything. Maternity sessions are generally photographed between 31 and 36 weeks, when your belly is beautifully rounded but you’re hopefully still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy the experience. My lifestyle newborn sessions typically take place when your baby is around 2 to 6 weeks old, although we can always talk through what makes the most sense for your family.

As an Austin maternity photographer and Austin newborn photographer, I help my clients plan both sessions, from choosing locations and outfits to figuring out the overall look they want for their photos. You don’t need to come to me with a fully formed vision or know exactly what kind of maternity portraits you’d like. We can look at inspiration, talk about your personal style, and figure out what feels right together.

And if you want your maternity photos to be bold and dramatic but your newborn photos to feel soft and relaxed, that’s absolutely an option! There’s no rule saying the two sessions need to look the same.

Two Sessions, One Beautiful Story

As an Austin maternity photographer, getting to photograph a family before their baby arrives and then seeing them again once they’re finally holding that little person is something I’ll never get tired of. I love that these two galleries show such different sides of the experience, from the excitement and anticipation of pregnancy to the quieter, more personal moments of those first few weeks together.

If you’re expecting a baby in Austin, Wimberley, or the surrounding Texas Hill Country and you’ve been thinking about booking both maternity and newborn photos, I’d love to help you plan them! Whether you’re drawn to dramatic maternity portraits, relaxed lifestyle newborn photography, or a combination of styles, we’ll create sessions that feel right for you and your family.
